Course Overview:
The world language program in MCS focuses on using languages in real-world situations. Students learn language that prepares them to communicate with others through oral language, print, and media. Although students will need to know vocabulary, grammar, and cultural information, they learn them in order to use them purposefully for communication with others. This emphasis on communication aligns the MCS curriculum with state and national standards.

At each of level of world language instruction, students expand the topics on which they are able to communicate, the ways in which they are able to express themselves and understand others, and the sophistication with which they can express ideas. Student understanding of other cultures, ability to behave in culturally acceptable ways, and to recognize the relationships between language and culture grow with each unit, year, and level of world language study.

Each level of the MCS language curriculum is guided by clear statements of what students will know and be able to do. Realistic expectations for how well students will be able to use their language and cultural skills are also clearly stated. These objectives determine what teachers teach, what practice activities are provided to students, and how student progress is evaluated. Ultimately, because the goal of learning language is to be able to use it, MCS teachers are expected to test and evaluate their students on what students can do with what they have learned.

MCS world language course descriptions include: 1) a series of ‘can do’ statements that indicate what students are expected to demonstrate their ability to do by the end of each academic year of instruction, and 2) a description of how well students can use the language they have learned at the end of the year.

Course Objectives:
At the end of Second Year of a World Language class you will be able to…
• Express needs and preferences
• Express feelings and emotions
• Give and follow simple directions
• Ask and answer questions about topics such as: school, family, past experiences, future goals, special events, the community, daily activities, etc.
• Read and understand simple, level-appropriate authentic text
• Give brief, organized oral presentations with visual aids
• Write short, organized paragraphs about familiar topics
• Demonstrate greater understanding of the influence of geography on food, clothing, and other cultural aspects.
• Compare and contrast with a deeper understanding the cultural similarities and differences
• Compare and contrast the view points of the target language with their own
• Use simple sentences and phrases to narrate in the past about familiar topics.
• Recognize the future tense.
• Use level-appropriate idiomatic expressions of the target language

How well will you be able to use their language at the end of the Second Year?
As you wrap up this level of language learning, you are feeling better about your ability to say what you want to say rather than having to rely a lot on memorized or short expressions. You can handle, with a bit more confidence, normal daily routines using your language, like ordering food, making simple purchases, asking for or giving directions. You speak and write more often in sentences than in just words or phrases, but your sentences are fairly simple and are most often in present tense. You can sometimes use past and future tense to communicate information, but your accuracy tends to decrease as you use these tenses. You are able to ask questions to gather information that you need or want. Since you are now creating more of what you want to communicate, you notice that you sometimes have to pause to formulate your thoughts--this is natural at this stage of your language learning journey. Errors continue to be present as you speak or write but you may find that you notice them more readily and are actually able to make some repairs as you go along. Your listening ability is expanding to include not only the conversations that you have in class with your teacher and your classmates but also short, routine telephone conversations and simple announcements and reports that you can hear on the television, radio, or on the Internet. You can read simple, straight-forward information about things that you are interested in as well as simple informational readings found in daily life (signs, menus, announcements/advisaries). When you read these texts, you generally always get the main idea and can pick out some details.**Students do not progress to a new proficiency level each year.

Attendance Policy:
Because Spanish is an oral language that requires daily practice, you are expected to attend each class. A significant portion of your grade will come from completing in–class assignments and practice.

A student who misses more than 1 day in one quarter should not expect to receive a grade higher than a “B”.
A student who misses more than 2 days in one quarter should not expect to receive a grade higher than a “C”.
A student who misses more than 3 days in one quarter should not expect to receive a grade higher than a “D”.

Students who do not bring “Absence Forms” will be considered truant and will be required to attend a Parent-Teacher-Student conference. Not attending the conference will result in an “Incomplete” grade for the student. Students are also subject, of course, to the student handbook and its consequences.

Classroom Expectations:
Be seated and working on the “Do Now” activity when the bell rings.
Ask for help and clarification if you do not understand.
Participate in all activities.
Bring your supplies with you to class everyday. Two passes are allowed per quarter for emergencies.

Classroom Rules:
1) Respect yourself (with your proper uniform, proper speech, and proper conduct)
2) Respect others (listen and respond to others ideas without yelling, bullying, or hitting)
3) Respect the teacher (raise your hand and be silent when the teacher’s hand is raised)
4) Respect the school (clean up your messes, do not stand or sit on desktops
5) Cell phones and other electronic devices are not to be used in class.

Grading Scale: 93-100% = A; 85%-92% = B; 75%-84% = C; 70-74% = D; 0%-69% = F

Tutoring hours: During eLearning Lab Hours (M, T, Th from 2:30-4:30)

Make-up work Policy: You may turn in the missed assignment within 3 days of the due date for up to 70% of the missed points.

How well will you be able to use their language at the end of the First Year?

By the end of your first year of language study, you can understand and say a lot. You can read and write in the language, as well. In general, you can confidently give personal information about yourself, as well as information about others; you can tell about your likes and dislikes, your preferences and your needs, and you can even begin to handle yourself using the language for some daily functions, like asking for or giving directions or maybe even buying things like food or clothing. You provide information--either by making statements or answering questions--using words, phrases or short sentences (sometimes memorized) based on the situation. When you hear the language, you may need to have it repeated, but you will probably be able to figure it out as long as the speaker remembers that you are a language learner. You can also ask easy questions to get information that you need. When you read, you understand the main idea(s) and you can pick out a few details. In writing, you will find that you can write much of what you can say by making lists, writing short messages and notes and even writing brief Internet-based social communications, using words, phrases or short sentences. You will probably make some mistakes when you communicate, but you should keep in mind that these mistakes are a natural part of learning a new language. Just pay attention to them to see if you can begin to eliminate them.**Students do not progress to a new proficiency level each year.

How do I pass?
You must complete all of the assignments in each module (or Chapter). If you completed a course with a failing grade, but passed one semester, you need to complete module 1 and the half of the modules that corresponds to the semester you failed.

Sample Student:
Semester 1 Grade: 90
Semester 2 Grade: 0
Overall Grade: 45

If the above student has 12 modules in their course, they only need to complete module 1, 7,8,9,10,11, and 12.

How do I turn in my work?
Click on the "Lessons" Tab, then click the "Lessons" folder to start your module. You will also click the "Lessons" tab to get to your assignments. Your assignments are in three separate folders labeled "Discussions," "Assignments," and "Quizzes/Tests." Do all of the assignments in the order they are assigned to you in the modules. Print your pace chart and checklist to help you keep track of your assignments.

How many points do I need to pass?
You must score an average of 70% on all assignments in the gradebook to get credit for the course. If you have 70% or higher, you will receive credit for the course. You can check your gradebook by clicking on "Reports" and Gradebook Grades.

Who do I see to take my test/get tutoring?
Each school has a coordinator. If you are not sure who to go to for your final exams, ask your secretary or principal. The next test date is posted in your computer lab. You must e-mail your teacher prior to this date and let them know you have completed all the modules for the semester exam.

How to submit voice activities:

1) Make sure your microphone is plugged into the Headphone jack of your computer. Ask your lab monitor if you are not sure how to do this. If you do not have a microphone, use headphones (headphones are backwards microphones and one of the ear pieces will function as a microphone.

2) Open your sound recorder. Most computers have a sound recorder:

click “start”

click “programs”

click “accessories”

then “entertainment”

then “sound recorder”

3) When you are ready to speak your activity, press record. Speak and push stop when you are done. Listen to your recording to make sure it worked. If it didn’t work you need to adjust your recording/playback volume. See your lab monitor for instructions.

4) Click “file” and “save as.”

5) Save your file to the desktop as your name and the assignment number. For example, if I am completing assignment 1.07, I would call my file JayMahannah1.07

6) Sign in to eLearning. Click on “Lessons,” click your assignment, and click “attachments.” Find your voice recording and click on it to attach it. Submit your file. You’re done! Make sure you also post to the discussion board to answer the discussion question or talk about your experience learning Spanish/doing the voice recording.

7) In the event that your equipment is not functioning, you may submit your activities to me as a transcript (type what you say) and I will award you 80% of the points your voice would have earned.

Each six weeks a class project will be assigned. These range from poems, to songs, to research, to crafts. In addition to the class project you may choose to do an extra credit project (worth up to 300 points based on quality and adherence to the rubric).

Some examples of projects include:

A- Writing- Create your own Spanish-English, English-Spanish dictionary using standard abbreviations (n, v, adj, etc.). Include at least 10 idioms or “grammar points.” 50 S-E entries and 50 E-S examples (100 total). Focus on a career-oriented theme of your choice (pastor, doctor, teacher, insurance salesman, computer programmer, etc.).

B- Writing- Submit one essay/personal narrative/video and one poem/poster/art for entry into the foreign language fair. See the important links section for Fair Guidelines.

C- Speaking- Commit to memory 100 words from our class/homemade flashcards (50 E-S, 50 S-E).

D- Speaking- Memorize a song or poem to be recited in Spanish in class/fair. Choose from attached list. Presentation in class will be required.

E- Speaking- Present a children's book in Spanish

F- Listening/Speaking- Memorize or write an act or short play to be performed in class/fair. See attached suggestions for prompts, memorized plays.

G- Listen to three “immigration tales” from the itunes library. Write a comparative essay/chart comparing the similarities and differences in the stories. See example in class.

H- If you have an idea that is not here, just ask Mr. Mahannah if it is appropriate. Choose another approved or suggested activity from the University of Memphis Fair Guidelines. http://www.fl.memphis.edu/.

J- Organize a "fiesta." See class examples.

K- Write a poem based on one of the Human Rights (click here)

Fall/Spring Term:
Your final exam is broken into three parts.

Course Introduction:

Congratulations! By choosing to learn Spanish (español) you are connecting to a community of over 320 million people in more than 22 countries across the world. I will be your guide as we discover and practice the language and culture of Spanish. This syllabus and website will aid you throughout the year by providing important itinerary for our stops on the journey. Course

Overview:I want you to be taught explicitly some strategies for foreign language learning, but I also want you to experience language in a very natural mundane way through our daily interactions and obligations, in the same way you probably learned English at home. I hope to do this by having a particular method of focus for each day, and by requiring you to use Spanish as much as you can tolerate (including when asking for help or for permission to leave class, etc.). My broad goal is for you to find a purpose for using Spanish outside the classroom: to connect with people, to explore careers in foreign language, to consider international or cross-cultural missions, etc. I also hope that you learn to enjoy language and use language in a clean and meaningful way.

Your Grade will be based in large part on how you demonstrate mastery of the Foreign Language Goals/Standards. Those are listed here (click here).

Your first assignment will be to pick three of the standards and write a short statement (1-3 sentences) about your goals for this course as they relate to the standards. Please include the full standard and number with your sheet.

Virtual Field Trip: Global Scavenger Hunt

Latitude and longitude coordinates are used to identify every place on the globe and are expressed in terms of degrees, minutes, and seconds.
Example: 66° 33′ 39″ N is read as 66 degrees, 33 minutes, and 39 seconds North. For the scavenger hunt items, you will have to identify the coordinates with degrees and minutes.

The 2007-2008 Spanish Awards were released today after 24 intense weeks of language study. Students were judged on accurate pronunciation, cultural awareness, written translations, and outstanding classroom performance. Students are limited to one award.

In the year 2000 I graduated from Centennial High School in Champaign, IL and later received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish with a minor in Special Education from Illinois State University. I also studied Spanish in Taxco, Mexico through the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. I have worked as a caseworker and instructor for the Illinois Migrant Council and have also worked as an investment representative for State Farm. 2007 is my second year teaching Spanish at Fairley and third year of overall teaching.

The purpose of the Spanish club is to promote participation in cultural activities that might take place off campus or after regular school hours. It also allows previous Spanish students to remain connected to the language. Cost to join the club is $5 which goes to cover costs for activities. A student board is elected each September to determine how the funds will be used. Cost of Spanish Club shirts is $5 for members and $10 for non-members.

World Language Fair

Summer Term: Projects are worth 8% of your final grade. One will be due each Friday.

Regular Term: Your projects are worth 200 points (about 10% of your grade). Choose one to turn in at the beginning of each 6 weeks (due on Fridays after you receive your report card). Depending on your schedule, you might not have class time to work on your project. Please plan accordingly. Due dates are:

A- Writing- Create your own Spanish-English, English-Spanish dictionary using standard abbreviations (n, v, adj, etc.). Include at least 10 idioms or “grammar points.” 50 S-E entries and 50 E-S examples (100 total). Focus on a career-oriented theme of your choice (pastor, doctor, teacher, insurance salesman, computer programmer, etc.).

B- Writing- Submit one essay/personal narrative/video and one poem/poster/art for entry into the foreign language fair. See the important links section for Fair Guidelines.

C- Speaking- Commit to memory 100 words from our class/homemade flashcards (50 E-S, 50 S-E).

D- Speaking- Memorize a song or poem to be recited in Spanish in class/fair. Choose from attached list. Presentation in class will be required.

E- Speaking- Present a children's book in Spanish

F- Listening/Speaking- Memorize or write an act or short play to be performed in class/fair. See attached suggestions for prompts, memorized plays.

G- Listen to three “immigration tales” from the itunes library. Write a comparative essay/chart comparing the similarities and differences in the stories. See example in class.

Fall/Spring Term:
Your final exam is broken into three parts.
(1) Written translation/Vocabulary Test,
(2) Personal Narrative,
(3) Conversation Performance/Speaking/Reading.

A personal narrative is required for the course. This will be a written reflection, story, or auto-biography which you will use to demonstrate the various grammatical and lexical items you have been mastering throughout the year. You will be required to submit two drafts to me throughout the year and at least two drafts for peers to review and revise. Additional requirements will be described in detail. (Rough Draft Due December 18, 2008; Final Draft due: May 25, 2009)

From the project list above, you must submit one project each six week period. You may drop your lowest score. (Due the first Friday of each grading period).

Day 5 – (Reading/Project Day) Student/Teacher conferences, guided project work time, and work on personal narrative (add this week’s grammar/vocab). Alternate weeks for sustained silent reading. Each student will do a brief summary/synthesis each semester on their SSR. Independently celebrate successes of week.

On days when we finish class activities early, you are expected to be working on your independent practice (HW), or refining one of your projects using the centers (computer, listening, video center, reading corner, flashcard center, etc.).

Congratulations! By choosing to learn Spanish (español) you are connecting to a community of over 320 million people in more than 22 countries across the world. I will be your guide as we discover and practice the language and culture of Spanish. This syllabus and website will aid you throughout the year by providing important itinerary for our stops on the journey.

Course Overview:
I want you to be taught explicitly some strategies for foreign language learning, but I also want you to experience language in a very natural mundane way through our daily interactions and obligations, in the same way you probably learned English at home. I hope to do this by having a particular method of focus for each day, and by requiring you to use Spanish as much as you can tolerate (including when asking for help or for permission to leave class, etc.).

My broad goal is for you to find a purpose for using Spanish outside the classroom: to connect with people, to explore careers in foreign language, to consider international or cross-cultural missions, etc. I also hope that you learn to enjoy language and use language in a clean and meaningful way.
